About Karel Bester

Karel Bester grew up to love music from a young age thanks to his parents. During Karel’s second last year of his law studies at Stellenbosch University, he made the decision to change direction and pursue music full-time. In 2019, while still studying in Stellenbosch, Karel recorded his first song. Karel’s believes in fostering positive artistic development within one’s own culture and promotes alternative Afrikaans music.

He is also the frontman of “Die Kraaines“, a colourful band he formed with three friends who all share a common love for art and Afrikaans. They describe their sound as “psychedelic boere-punk” – combining elements of punk music, traditional Afrikaans folk (“boeremusiek”) and country music. They experiment with different, modern and unconventional styles and like to try new ideas.

Karel Bester is a regular performer at The Purple Windmill! Catch his next show this Sunday (4th August 2024).
